In May 2011, the Army Corps of Engineers opened the Morganza Spillway, diverting water from the Mississippi River to the Atchafalaya River, which then carried the extra water to the Gulf of Mexico.  This kept Baton Rouge and New Orleans from flooding.
The Louisiana National Guard mobilized to build emergency flood control structures in order to protect homes, farms, and businesses in the Atchafalaya floodplain, and Base Logistics was there to support the National Guard workers with needed services and facilities.
