2010 Macondo Blowout, Gulf of Mexico
On April 20, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, in the Macondo Prospect, exploded and sank about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast.  Oil from the Macondo well spewed out of the blowout preventer on the sea-floor.
By May 4, about 7,500 workers, 2,000 volunteers, and 170 vessels (skimmers, tugs, barges, recovery vessels, commercial fishing boats, etc.), were involved in the cleanup activities.
Workers finally capped off the gusher on July 15, after 4.9 million barrels (205.8 million gallons) of oil had escaped.
Base Logistics supported this cleanup effort from April 2010 to February 2011, when cleanup efforts shut down for the winter.  We set up and managed 20 base camps, staging sites, and feeding sites along the Gulf coast from Grand Isle, Louisiana to Pensacola, Florida.  This support included mobile catering units to feed workers and responders—along with various supplementary equipment, services, and facilities.
